YOU CAN NOT POTTY TRAIN A SUGGIE LIKE YOU CAN A CAT OR DOG, BUT WITH DEDICATION AND ROUTINE YOU CAN PREVENT ACCIDENTS!
Suggies have a tendency to go to the bathroom as soon as they wake up.
If you take a news paper and set it down on a flat surface (for example in a sink or bathtub)
you can put your suggie on it and wait a few moments while they do their business.
tip: if you take a baby wipe and wipe the suggies
area it will stimulate them to go to the bathroom
(this tip is good for when your suggies have been up and playing for a long period of time and are due for a bathroom break.)
Once they have done their business they should be alright for a few hours. - you will get to know your sugar gliders potty schedule better as you spend more time bonding.
tip: if you keep a little book for your suggies. you can monitor their bathroom breaks witch will help you develop a routine and fewer accidents will occur.
If you wait to long to bring your babies to the bathroom they will not hesitate to do their business where ever they are!
But if you continue bringing them to their newspaper every few hours (depending on the glider) they will get use to your routine and will hold back from just going anywhere knowing they will soon be brought to the paper.
Sugar gliders also do not like to go to the bathroom where they sleep although as joeys they will have accidents in their pouches, or can also occur when being handled too much when in their pouch also intact males tend to mark.
note: Sugar glider urine has a strong smell. It is very distinctive but can easily be controlled by keeping up with cage duties
Another important fact is that male gliders will mark you if they don't recognize your scent. They do this by leaving a couple of drops of urine on you, or by rubbing their scent glands on you (scent glans are located on the top of their heads and chest) The males do this to make you smell "normal" and like "one of them again"
